A document of extraordinary resistance.

This is a short and simple, yet poignant autobiography of Annie Burton, who recounts her early childhood as a slave on a southern plantation while the Civil War raged around her, and after the Emancipation Proclamation, how her life changed as she struggled to maintain herself and family, manage her finances, and develop as a free person of color. In it Burton offers extraordinary resistance to the emerging racial caste system of Reconstruction and post-Reconstruction America. While her text begins with reminiscences about her childhood in chattel bondage, at the heart of her work is the power struggle between black women domestic workers and their white female employers. The last half of the narrative relies heavily upon speeches, poems, and hymns written by others that stirred Annie's religious passions and increased her pride in her heritage, including a very powerful speech by Dr. P. Thomas Stanford.

Memories of Childhood's Slavery Days is not only one woman's quest from slavery to physical freedom but also her journey from a proscribed role to the creation of own free identity.

I'd say this book was a valiant effort due to the author's clean and grammatically correct writing style.
However, this book turned me off from the first chapter. The chapter's title, which indicated the narrative was about moments of a happy childhood yet it really wasn't as it told of slave whippings, no food for the children and working in the fields. I see anything but happiness in those instances.
This book tends to be all over the place and the timing of events seemed off just a little,
Finally, this book fell flat in regards to description and detail. I would have loved a little more realism and vividness in describing the characters features, places of residence and furnishings in this reading.

Enjoyed reading for further research into a slaves life.
This was a bit too saccharine for me. The happy girl working on the plantation tells a false story of this period in US history.
A better book is Someone Knows My Name by Lawrence Hill. It's a well researched novel, written in first person. The life of a young girl kidnapped into slavery and her experiences as a slave and later, a free woman are wonderfully detailed.

A very quick and interesting read. It seems like a fair assessment of life at that time. Sometimes it's hard to believe how resilient the author is after what she had gone through in life. She has a move forward and put the past behind you attitude about life and this book is inspiring. She was an amazing woman and I plan on seeking out more about her. I also plan to read other author's stories about post slavery life as well.
This book had some very interesting descriptions, but was not particularly well written. Written in, if memory serves me, 1906, the facts of the authors' life would be true, but to be honest, the sections like "My Favorite Hymns" I just skipped. It was free otherwise I probably would not have purchased it. Also, it was left justifies throughout, making for somewhat uncomfortable reading.
I was really disappointed with this book. It was slow and pretty dull. I'm a history buff and realize history is often a bit on the dry side, but this book was dry to the extreme. It lacked in content also, which led me to say farewell before I turned the last page; which is something I rarely do once I get by the sample segment of a book. Sorry, but I can't recommend this book.
This is an amazing read. I found myself visualizing what it must have been like for this young girl coming into woman hood in the time of slavery. The hardships she endured. And having to leave her brother and sister for a while.
The title is "Memories of Childhood's Slavery Days," but the bulk of her memories are of AFTER the Civil War. Most of the memories have nothing to do with slavery OR childhood. The early memories are mildly interesting, and one can imagine this woman writing down her recollections in an honest, clear way. But then the war ends, she becomes free, and basically goes from job to job and home to home without much of any interest happening. It's like a diary rather than a memoir. "I did this. And then I did that. And then I did this." The later chapters aren't even about or by Annie, and I am not sure why they were included. I got this as a free book and was happy to read it once, but will not be reading it again or recommending it.
I'd say this book was a valiant effort due to the author's clean and grammatically correct writing style.
